Character, Confidence, and... Strategy!

When we think of leadership, character and confidence are two obvious areas. Through values, virtues and traits, we obtain a character. Confidence makes leaders takes the extra step in executing their mission. It sounds simple and seems sufficient but often, leaders are missing the third area—strategy.

According to Forbes, statistics show that less than 10% of leaders show strategic skills. The situation can be explained by several aspects. The first barrier is that a leader can quickly drown in a pool of short-term decisions that have to be made and drifts away from long-term decisions. These daily decisions quickly overwhelm the leaders and take too much importance. Therefore, the leader is unable to think strategically, whether it's for the organization or growing other leaders.

An organization that wants to grow needs a plan to develop new leaders around them which contributes to creating a culture of leadership development. Other barriers that contribute to a lack of strategy can include:

  • The fear of success includes various fears like the market, competition, time and other factors that come together to form this main fear. The following Inc article discussed these different fears and how Bill Gates as well as Mark Zuckerberg overcome them.
  • The need to be needed is also another barrier which concerns the leader directly. The needs of others is put before their own needs and the leader believes that the organization only needs them and that its needs can only be met by them alone.

In the following video, find out more about these barriers and strategy is discussed further along with insightful contributions. For more information on how we can help you grow your leadership, click here.
