How Dare We Say Narcissism is Increasing in Youth!
Selfies, Selfie Sticks, Facebook, SnapChat, Twitter. Are these vehicles for the rise in narcissism among younger people today? What is your take on the self-centeredness of Gen Y?Now before you judge me, I have a confession to make. Born in 1952, I am from the “Baby Boomer” generation of “Peace, Love, Dove.” This is the first generation that became mobile, more “self centered” after the sacrifices of the World War Two Generation that gave their lives for global freedom and the economic growth we enjoy today. In Asia, many of our grandparents suffered great hardship and even death during this global war.So my confession is, I too, am narcissistic but blessed to say I am on the daily journey of humility. What about Gen X and Gen Y how do they view the world? Dr. Tim Elmore has devised a generational chart for USA and ELAvate has adapted it for Southeast Asians. Review both these charts below and see how each generation is changing. My global view is that individualism is increasing. Young people around the world have their basic security needs met, gain global mobility, both men and women are better educated, and in many nations, young people have much more individual choice: jobs, career, where and how to live, marriage partners, and in personal consumption.Social media has also magnified the voice of the individual whether it is Trump Tweets, or a Facebook page on what one ate for dinner last night. Mobility in Asia also brings freedom from the grasp of the extended family and the constraints of putting the needs of the clan ahead of the individual. Discretional income means the younger generation has choices on how to consume, experience and enjoy life.I believe the younger generation is our hope but us older folk must help them navigate this increasing complex world. Individualism can lead to narcissism “Me first mentality” or it can also lead to young leaders make the world a better place. What are you doing to coach and mentor the younger generation? Here are two articles from Dr. Tim Elmore and Dr. Jean Twenge in Psychology Today magazine on narcissism of the younger generation. Read and make your own observations and decisions on leading and coaching the youth of today.Have a great week building relationships across generations!
