Decision Making As a Leader

In times growth, the success of an organization is often regarded as a by product of the market place and the organizations strategic position. However, when things aren’t going so well, attention goes to the company’s leadership.Leaders have the unique responsibility of making the decisions that define the success or failure of the venture. There is constant pressure when making decisions as a leader; not only do you have the obligations of achieving your organizations objectives but you also have to take care of the welfare of your staff. However, it’s very unlikely that you’ll be able to make decisions during stable conditions. Times of crisis, often define how a leader will be remembered. Here are some important things to remember when making a decision.

  • Stay calm. It’s entirely likely that everyone is feeling the same way as you. It’s your job to keep a level head and help others feel comfortable.
  • Stay true to your values. You may be faced with a difficult situation doesn’t mean you should sacrifice your integrity. John Wooden said  “The road to easy street goes through the sewer”, you may fix the decision quickly but might come out dirtied. People only follow individuals they respect, lose their respect and lose you followers.
  • Don’t rely on tech, rely on people. Technology often fails which can leave you utterly stranded. People will be your lifeline, not only will they be able to support you but they can be a valuable source of information, more than you could possibly gather on your own.

Ultimately, maintain the welfare of your followers. You have a duty of care and protection to safeguard them from troubles. E.M. Godsman
