Many are waiting for 5G to upgrade their hand phones. You can upgrade to “5G” now to power your attitude to new levels of achievement and life satisfaction in 2021. Review the 5 G’s below, rate yourself, and determine how you can employ each of the “5G’s” to have a more enriching, positive 2021. Here they are – upgrade yourself!
Grateful. 2020 for most of us has been challenging. Daily reflection on what is going well in your life is crucial. Grateful people are more positive people. Grateful people don’t participate in pity parties! Key Action: Start a daily “Gratitude Journal” and write out the things, people, and activities you are grateful for each day. At the end of each month, review it to see how blessed your life is. And, in 2021, express more “thank you’s” in your day to day life. Let others know you appreciate them.
Gracious. Gracious speech has the power to heal, build up, and encourage. But, oh, the tongue is hard to tame! Have you ever regretted something you said? asks author Kathy Howard. She suggests these actions to be gracious: Refuse to use negative speech – any words that wound, discourage, or tear down. Commit to using “good” words – kind and gracious words that build up and encourage. Find something positive with which to begin and end every conversation. Don’t waste time talking about things that can’t be changed. Focus on the other person. Ask questions about the people you are communicating with and how they feel. Exercise self-control. Sometimes the most gracious thing to say is nothing. Key Action: Keep track for a week how many times you speak negatively, complain, or put down others, and, how many times you speak graciously, listen with full attention, or encourage others. Adjust your outlook and communication accordingly!
Generous. Are you a “giver” or a “taker?” Reflect on how generous you were in 2020. The website “SkillsYouNeed.com” outlines how being generous grows you as a secure, less fearful person: “We can probably all agree that when we talk about someone being generous, we mean that they give without asking for anything back, and in a way that benefits those receiving. Generous people also have the right attitude to wealth. Money is treated appropriately: as a means to acquire the things that you need, and not as an end in itself. They are able to spend money well on others, and not just on themselves. Generous people may be financially poor, but they still give their time and energy to others. The key is to engage with others for their benefit, with no thought of the reward that may accrue as a result.” Key Action: Make specific commitments in 2021 to be more generous to others in terms of your time and money. Volunteer, give to causes you believe in, coach people younger than you.
Genuine. “Transparency and authenticity are of the most important words I think about on a daily basis. I strive to stay transparent and authentic in every conversation and interaction I have, because I have found that my employees, partners, customers and investors alike all immensely appreciate honesty and sincerity. This is turn has helped me build great relationships with others,” says author Dave Kerpen. Being genuine builds trust and inspires others to collaborate with you. "A lack of transparency results in distrust and a deep sense of insecurity," says the Dalai Lama. "Be yourself--not your idea of what you think somebody else's idea of yourself should be!” by Henry David Thoreau. Key Action: Read the Forbes Magazine article by Travis Bradberry on how genuine people are, well, genuine. https://www.forbes.com/sites/travisbradberry/2016/05/10/12-habits-of-genuine-people/?sh=55ede504461d
Grit. Cultivate your “grit.” Angela Duckworth defines “grit” as passion and perseverance for long-term and meaningful goals. It is the ability to persist in something you feel passionate about and persevere when you face obstacles. It’s about having direction and commitment.Grit is also about perseverance. To persevere means to stick with it; to continue working hard even after experiencing difficulty or failure. Key Action: Write out your life mission. Define your talents and gifts that support your life mission. Then determine your goals for 2021 that give you the “grit” to achieve and be successful this coming year that satisfies your passion in life.
A better 2021 is coming your way. You may need to change. Start with strengthening your 5G’s and see yourself reaching new exciting levels of satisfaction and success this coming year. 2021 is only 5 weeks away.
Have a great week beginning your plan of action for 2021!
