Actions You Can Take for an Extraordinary 2023

By Michael J Griffin

Wow! It is already the fourth quarter of 2022. Many of us are already into reviewing results for 2022 and planning our 2023 goals. These 4th Q activities usually involve the review of sales, revenue, KPI’s and of course the dreaded year-end performance appraisal.

Here are some activities you and your organization can do that will enhance and improve your company culture and employee motivation that will lead to a much more successful 2023. We all need to accelerate our success after two plus stressful Covid years! ELAvate has extensive experience in assisting organizations across Asia with these corporate culture initiatives.

Upgrade Your Performance Appraisal Process

Many companies may have a most a twice a year appraisal process and some only have one end-of-year appraisal. This is demotivating to the appraiser and the employee. Actions to improve the appraisal process that lead to results:

Split the year end Appraisal Process in three. The first appraisal is on employee performance, the second meeting is on employee personal development planning, and the third is a meeting on salary and bonus based on employee, team performance and corporate profitability.

Move to Quarterly Appraisals. For 2023 move your company to quarterly appraisals that include the performance appraisal (based on 2023 quarterly KPI’s) and the personal development plan review. Implementing these actions makes the final year-end appraisal less stress for all and is more a celebration of what the supervisor and employee already know.

Train your Managers to Conduct Collaborative Appraisals. Most managers are unskilled at planning for, and, conducting collaborative performance appraisals. This leads to unneeded stress and demotivated employees. ELAvate has a comprehensive two-day workshop that trains your managers how to prepare, plan and conduct collaborative performance appraisals.

Conduct an Employee Engagement/Climate Survey. The stress of Covid has changed what employees want from your company and what they want from their life. A safe way to gain insight into your employees’ engagement with your company, what they think of your corporate culture and your leadership is to conduct and analyze the feedback you receive from a well-structured employee climate survey. ELAvate has been conducting these surveys since 1996 in Asia. If you want to receive a generic report let me know.

Conduct a Leadership 360 Degree Competency Survey for Managers. Covid with the move to virtual communication and supervision has changed the parameters of coaching and leadership for many managers and their employees. Gaining competency and attitudinal feedback from bosses, peers and subordinates using a 360 tool, can provide the factual information for your managers to plan, lead, coach, and motivate teams and individuals better. A 360 report can be the bedrock to develop a fact based manager development plan for 2023. With the ability to re-survey, this tool can stimulate real leadership growth when supported by appropriate training and coaching.

Have a Year End Retreat. The past two years have prevented teams from getting together face to face for some new visioning, relationship building, teamwork and just plain fun. A year-end retreat, whether your company had a good or so-so year can set the vision, strategy, and motivation for a more successful 2023. ELAvate has helped many directors plan and conduct a motivating cost-effective retreat. Even if we are not your “event planner and conductor,” ELAvate would be honored to give you ideas and insight on planning a worthwhile company retreat.

Deciding to implement just one of these year-end initiatives can support your plans, and motivate your employees to collaborate for a great 2023. Contact me for a no obligation discussion on any of these year-end actions. I would be happy to support you, your leadership, and success in 2023. michael.griffin@elavateglobal.com
