Take Timeout This Weekend to Reflect on Questions for a Better 2022

Adapted from Dr. Tim Elmore and Cara Brennan Allemano

5 minute read

Dr. Tim Elmore of Growing Leaders advises us to take half of a day to get completely alone, get away from the house and find a quiet place to reflect. During this time, think, pray, and review the past year, making notes of your 2021 evaluations along the way. Perform this ritual (this weekend?) by asking yourself the following questions:

  1. What are my fondest memories of last year?

  2. What were the big projects I completed during the year?

  3. What were the defining moments during the last year?

  4. What did I procrastinate on and fail to get done?

  5. What books and mentors had the greatest impact on me? Why?

  6. What were my biggest disappointments this past year?

  7. Did my activities lead me closer to my friends and family?

  8. What will be my biggest goals as I move into next year?

  9. Where did I neglect to live up to the standards I set for myself?

  10. What am I committed to doing this next year to fulfil my lifelong mission ad vision?

Answering these questions allows you to accomplish two objectives. First, it forces you to focus on the important things in your life and not get lost in the trivial ones. Second, it furnishes you with a platform to set goals for 2022. If you don’t already have a “review plan,” give it a try.

Cara Brennan Allemano of Udemy gets us thinking more specifically about our career, our life mission. She says you may be feeling restless but undirected. You know your current position isn’t cutting it but aren’t quite sure where to go next. That’s okay. Depending on where you are in your career, I suggest asking yourself some questions to help clarify your thinking and set you on the right path heading into the new year ( and possibly a new career path!).

11. Am I still learning something new every day?

12. What skills do I need to excel in my role?

13. Are there skills my role requires that I don’t have?

14. When I look at colleagues a level above me, is that something I want to be doing?

15. Does my role leverage my strengths?

16. Do I enjoy the work I do?

17. Am I progressing in my career the way I imagined?

18. Am I still challenged in my role every day?

19. How am I supporting and empowering my people in their roles?

20. Am I happy with the balance that I have between work and life?

21. How can I bring others along with me as a leader, or be a mentor? (Do I have good mentor – coaches?)

22. Am I ready for the possibility of working many more decades into the future? What are the implications for my current and future roles?

After you reflect and answer many of these questions, it may motivate you to begin goal setting for 2022. To assist in getting you traction to change in 2022, you can download our ELAvate Lego Goal Sheet to map out your life goals for a more successful 2022 across these perspectives:
